Common Questions

1. What should I expect during the first session?

The first session is focused on what brings you in for therapy. You and the therapist will be able to discuss treatment goals and modalities that will be utilized in assisting you to reach these goals. Be prepared to discuss openly and honestly what your concerns are as this will be the first step in moving forward towards your goals. You will complete an intake assessment and also receive information regarding your rights and privacy practice.

2. How do I know when it’s time to call a therapist?

If you’ve been struggling with depression and/or anxiety, grief, distress that has been building up for years or just want someone to talk to, it might be time to call. A trained therapist is interested in helping you find your own answers by helping you connect with what is true and right for you.

3. What are the benefits of therapy?

Therapy can assist in helping you address immediate issues and symptoms. Once you have developed skills necessary to cope with these symptoms, therapy shifts to helping you gain insight into the deeper issues that are the root cause of the problems or symptoms. A therapist will help you reach your own answers and truths. Healing and growth will develop from therapy. This will require open communication along with a commitment to work towards your goals both in and outside of sessions.

4. How long does therapy last?

The length of therapy varies from person to person. Some factors to consider are what brings you in for therapy, coping mechanisms and how long this problem has been in the making. On average, therapy is usually weekly to address immediate concerns. Typically, after 4-6 months therapy is biweekly and then monthly once the individual has reached a maintenance phase.

5. How long are sessions?

Sessions are usually 55 minutes. Sometimes people schedule 1.5 sessions, which is 75 minutes, or a double session which is 1 hour and 40 minutes. These longer sessions work really well for couples. Please note that most insurances will not reimburse for double sessions. You will be responsible for any additional fees.

6. What ages do you see?

urrently, only adults are served. Parents are welcome to bring their child to a session occasionally to process a problem.

7. Will anyone know I am in therapy?

Therapy is completely confidential and protected under HIPPA laws. You will receive our privacy practice during your intake assessment.  You will have an opportunity within your first two sessions to complete release of information forms for anyone you would like involved in your treatment. As mandated reporters, confidentiality is broken if:

1. There is a threat to harm yourself.

2. There is a threat or disclosure of harming someone else.

3. Elderly or child abuse has been disclosed or suspected.

8. What are the benefits to pre-marital counseling?

Pre-marital counseling allows couples to address issues, concerns and/or fears prior to saying “I do” so that expectations are understood by both individuals. In addition, it allows for any concerns to be addressed before they become larger issues down the road. Being proactive in creating an environment conducive for mutual growth, love and understanding will provide a foundation for a long-lasting life together. Not addressing issues that have been allowed to linger makes for a difficult healing process.

9. Can I bring a friend or a family member with me to sessions?

Therapy is a very personal experience. During therapy you will grow and at times it is harder before it gets easier. Asking a loved one to join you in session can be beneficial in providing insight on how they can best assist you. In doing so, it must be understood that therapy is just for the one individual and the friend/family member is strictly there for support. You and your therapist can discuss if this would be beneficial for you.

10. Can I be prescribed medication?

Faith Haven therapists are not able provide prescription medication. Referrals for a Psychiatrist in the area will be provided if this is something you would like to explore. Some Psychiatrist are booked for 3-5 months out. Speaking to your primary care physician in the interim is suggested.

11. What if I need help or in a crisis in between sessions?

For non-emergencies please feel free to call or email your therapist during regular business hours.  Calls and emails will be returned within 24 hours. For emergencies please go to your local emergency room or contact Re:Solve Crisis Services at (888) 796-8226.
